It is worth noting that lung cancer can either be referred to as primary or secondary. It is primary if the cancer originates from the lungs and secondary if the cancer originates from elsewhere, and cancer cells spread to the lungs. In most cases, this type of cancer is primary simply because one of the major causes of lung cancer is carcinogenic substances found in tobacco. The tobacco smoke contains carcinogenic substances that are deposited to the lungs of the smoker.

Once you start smoking, these substances get deposited in your lungs and accumulate on daily basis as you continue smoking. These substances convert the normal cells found in the lungs into cancer cells. These cancer cells begin to dig deep into the walls of the lungs slowly by slowly as long as the person does not stop smoking. In the long run, most of the normal cells in the lungs would have been converted into cancerous cells and the person can now be diagnosed with lung cancer. This process of developing lung cancer takes quite a long time. It can take more than 50 years and this is the reason as to why people who are diagnosed with this type of cancer are old people who started smoking at their teenage.

The lung cancer symptoms can actually take years before they appear and get noticed. This is because this type of cancer affects people slowly by slowly even without the victim realising anything strange in his or her body. Smokers for example get this type of cancer in their 70’s. There are quite a number of symptoms associated with this type of cancer. One of the symptoms of lung cancer is persistent or intense coughing. This means that the victim will always be coughing for a reason that you cannot tell immediately. The reason for this persistent coughing can only be realised after a test is carried on to tell that the person is diagnosed with this type of cancer. Another symptom is pain in the chest and the back. This is actually brought about by persistent coughing where the muscles in the chest and back become painful. The mucus or sputum that is coughed has a changed colour. This is a clear indication that the person has this type of cancer.

It is true that the situation worsens if the lung cancer spreads. This poses additional symptoms to those destination parts of the body. You may find that the lymph nodes are swollen and enlarged. This is a sign that cancer cells have migrated from one place to another via the lymphatic system and caused the lymph nodes to swell. Sometimes cancer spread to the brain, and patients are likely to experience headaches and seizures. This is actually very serious, and once you realise such symptoms you are supposed to seek medical attention immediately. In most cases, the liver may enlarge if the cancer cells are taken to the liver by the blood. This is a serious condition that may lead to surgery and in most cases the situation is uncontrollable.

Lung cancer may also cause pain in the bones and make them brittle and broken. Research has also shown that this type of cancer affect’s adrenal glands causing hormonal imbalances. It is true that as cancer cells spread, they use a lot of body’s energy leaving the person weak. This may result to a number of ailments such as fever, fatigue, weight loss and many more.
